Introduction to Jigsaw Puzzle Master

Jigsaw Puzzle Master on CanvasClashes combines the tactile pleasure of traditional tabletop puzzles with modern digital conveniences. Unlike physical cardboard puzzles that occupy your dining table for weeks, can lose tiny corner pieces under couches, or suffer from faded print quality, our HTML5 puzzle engine offers infinite replayability, high-definition digital zoom, and instant cloud progress saves.

Whether you are an absolute beginner assembling a relaxing 24-piece landscape or a speed-solver racing the clock on a 300-piece complex Boris Vallejo fantasy painting, this guide provides all the operational knowledge you need to maximize your PPM (Pieces Per Minute) and climb the global leaderboards.

Essential Game Controls: Desktop & Touch

The puzzle board supports multi-input interaction designed for mice, touchpads, and multi-touch mobile screens:

  • Picking & Dragging Pieces: Click and hold (or tap and drag) any piece to move it across the canvas board. While held, pieces automatically raise to the top Z-index layer so they never get obscured by surrounding pieces.
  • Piece Rotation: When rotation mode is enabled, click on a piece (or tap on mobile) while stationary to rotate it clockwise by 90 degrees. On desktop keyboards, hovering over a piece and pressing R or Space will also rotate it immediately.
  • Automatic Interlocking Snapping: When two matching puzzle pieces are brought within proximity of each other (within 15 pixels of their true relative offset) and their rotations match, they automatically lock together with a satisfying acoustic click sound. Once locked, they form a cohesive connected cluster that moves together as a single unit!
  • Board Panning & Zooming: Use your mouse scroll wheel (or two-finger pinch gesture on touchscreen devices) to zoom in and out of fine artistic details. Click and drag the board background to pan across the puzzle tray.
💡
Pro Tip: Group Movement:

Once you connect 5 or 10 pieces together, click anywhere on the group to move the entire assembly at once. Connected groups will automatically snap to other clusters when aligned!

Key In-Game Assistant Tools

Directly above and below the canvas workspace, players have access to a suite of non-intrusive assistive tools:

  1. Ghost Picture Overlay (G / Eye Button): Toggles a semi-transparent, full-scale reference image directly on the puzzle board beneath your active pieces. This allows you to verify color gradients, horizon lines, and fine architectural alignments without needing to switch tabs or look at a tiny thumbnail.
  2. Edge Pieces Filter (Border Button): Instantly sweeps all interior pieces into temporary transparency or perimeter staging, highlighting only the outer edge and 4 corner pieces. Completing the frame first is the gold standard of jigsaw solving!
  3. Scatter & Arrange Pieces: Distributes loose pieces cleanly around the margins of the board, preventing dense stacks from hiding crucial connectors.
  4. Save Progress & Pause: Need to step away? Registered players can click the Pause / Save button to write piece coordinates, rotations, and elapsed time to the cloud. You can resume right where you left off from any device!

Understanding Scoring & Metrics (PPM)

CanvasClashes ranks players using two primary performance metrics:

  • Elapsed Time & Moves: The total seconds elapsed from the first piece interaction to the final snap. Minimal moves indicate deliberate, calculated piece placement.
  • Pieces Per Minute (PPM): Calculated as (Total Pieces / Elapsed Seconds) * 60. A casual solver typically achieves 8–15 PPM, while seasoned speed-solvers often reach 30+ PPM. Your career PPM is tracked on your Central Profile.
